SNANC Fall Meeting 2017 Opioid Crisis Update

  • MAHEC Mary C. Nesbitt Biltmore Campus 121 Hendersonville Road Asheville, NC, 28803 United States (map)

School nurses play a vital role in caring for the student’s
collaborative treatment plan related to their overall pain
management goals. They also serve as a student/patient
advocate when providing education for proper use of
opioids. However, studies have revealed a pain management
knowledge gap among nurses caring for students/patients
who are receiving opioid analgesics. This gap includes
assessment; pharmacologic management; use of adjuvant
medications; risks of addiction; risks of respiratory
depression; and disposal and storage of opioid analgesics.
This program is designed to assist nurses in obtaining
knowledge of opioids, with a concurrent and evidencebased
presentation. Nurses will also be provided valuable
information related to current practice standards related to
opioid prescribing, dispensing and administration. Registered
nurses’ knowledge of and attitudes about opioid use can have
a positive impact on the current national opioid crisis.
