Northwest Region SNANC Fall Meeting hosted by Asheboro City and Randolph County School Nurses - Dealing with Incivility, Bullying and Lateral Violence and the Legal Implications of Social Media

The first part of the activity will describe the concepts
of incivility, lateral violence and bullying and discuss its
prevalence in the health care workforce. It will also discuss its effect on patient safety, patient outcomes and
workplace satisfaction and dissatisfaction. How to develop a healthy work environment will be presented
including the strategies of emotional intelligence, cognitive rehearsal techniques and de-escalation.
The second half of the activity will explore social media’s impact on health care and what legal regulations
must be considered when using social media as an employee, employer or as an agency. The program
reviews current legal cases setting precedent in North Carolina and throughout the United States. The use
of social media is ever expanding and is not only popular for personal use, but is also increasingly used to
promote and market health care programs and agencies.
Upon completion of this knowledge-based program, participants should be better able to:
• Describe the concepts of horizontal violence, incivility and bullying.
• Discuss their impact on members of the healthcare team, patient safety, and healthcare worker
retention.
• Practice strategies to develop a healthy work environment.
• Describe how “social media” is used.
• Discuss case law setting precedent in the use of social media in health care.
• Describe the expert consensus on ways to keep employers, employees, and the consumer protected in
the social media environment.
