About the Workshop
We are often trained to work with adults, or children, but rarely have we learned how to be most effective in engaging children AND adults together in therapy. This workshop will offer research-informed strategies for engaging children of all ages in family intervention work. Consideration of normative and non-normative development across young and older children will be included; as well as how to advocate for relational and systemic interventions in the workplace.
Upon completion of this workshop, participants should increase their ability to effectively care for clients by being able to: • Discuss the benefits of relational and systemic perspectives on engaging children in therapy • Explore early to late childhood normative and non-normative expressions of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors commonly witnessed in therapy • Address how the provider can engage children more successfully in therapy work • Identify strategies that will help enhance the therapeutic experience for the child, family members, and providers; as well as implement these skills in their daily practice.
