"Substance Abuse Trends in School-Age Students: What Nurses Need to Know for Assessment & Intervention"

In this session, the most common illegal and prescription drugs abused by school age children are discussed, as well as common side effects, and red flags to identify when students are abusing these drugs. Helpful Internet resources for the school nurse are also identified during the lecture.
Objectives
• Outline the most common drugs and illegal substances used by students and their physical and emotional effects
• Discuss red flags in assessment of students that may be abusing both prescription and non prescription drugs and illegal substances
• Identify interviewing strategies of students who may be abusing

Afternoon Session (Back by Popular Demand!):
“Red Flags for Pediatric Infectious Diseases Encountered in the School Setting”
1:00 pm - 4:15 pm

For the afternoon session, we will review the most common pediatric infectious diseases and “red flags” of physical assessment that school nurses should be aware of in order to assess and triage ill children in the school setting. We will review basic physical assessment of the school age child in relation to body systems.
Objectives
• Identify background, epidemiology, signs and symptoms, treatment and guidance for the most common pediatric infectious diseases
• Review basic physical assessment of the school age child

Full Day Option--Attend Both Sessions!
6.0 CNE contact hours will be provided for those attending both the morning and the afternoon sessions.
Light breakfast and lunch will be provided for those who attend the full day.
