The 2015 North Carolina School Nurse Administrator of the Year is Rebecca Smith from Wilkes County Schools. Rebecca received her BSN from Michigan State in 1984. In 1995 she joined the Wilkes County Schools as a school nurse. In 1999 she received her National School Nurse Certification. She is a current member of NASN and SNANC and an Instructor for the NWAHEC School Nurse Certification Review Course.
Rebecca is currently a Lead School Nurse and also covers grades 6-12. The school nurses in Wilkes County nominated Rebecca because she is a leader in the school community. She serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, community and health care professionals by making home visits, providing training to school staff and administrators and serving as a health resource. She serves a pivotal role to provide expertise and oversight for the provision of school health services and promotion of health education in her county. Rebecca is a member of the Health Department County Emergency Preparedness Team, School Health Advisory Committee and works with the Public Health Dental Clinic to provide onsite services at schools. She has been instrumental in coordinating the MESH(Mobile Expanded School Health)services for Wilkes County high schools.
Rebecca is a mentor to new school nurses and helps coordinate shadowing experiences for student nurses. She is admired and respected for her vast clinical knowledge and sound judgment. Billie Howell, a school social worker summed up Rebecca by stating “she will stand up and advocate for anyone in need”.
